Modern tunnel boring machines consist of a rotating boring head, followed by a main bearing and a thrust system with downstream safety systems. The choice and type of tunnel boring machine depends, among other things, on the geological conditions and the amount of groundwater available. The cutting wheel or cutterhead of the tunnelling machine usually has a ring-shaped drive: a ring-shaped large bearing with internal gearing is fitted with several pinions on the circumference, which are driven hydraulically or electrically via planetary gears and bevel helical gears. Additional slip clutches with a slip monitoring system are located between the motors and the gearboxes. This prevents overloading of the entire drive system in the event of a blockage of the cutting head.
